ABOUT US

The Peel-Halton-Dufferin Adult Learning Network (PHDALN) is a special group that's been around since 1993.

We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their goals — no matter where they’re starting from.

We work with 11 different service providers across the communities of Peel Region, Halton Region, and Dufferin County. Our programs support adult learners who want to strengthen their reading, writing, math, and digital skills, finish high school, prepare for further education or training, or improve their chances of finding and keeping a job.

Our Mission

The Adult Learning Network is dedicated to helping organizations like yours enhance the skills of their workforce and clients. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to improve their skills and contribute to a thriving community.

Our network partners provide a welcoming and supportive learning environment where learners can gain the confidence and skills they need to succeed in work and life. We offer a wide range of programs and classes designed to meet diverse needs, whether someone is looking to improve their reading, writing, math, or computer skills.

We work with adults from all walks of life, including:

  • People who want to upgrade their basic skills for work or daily life
  • Adults preparing for college, apprenticeship, or employment training
  • Newcomers building confidence in English reading and writing
  • Individuals returning to school after time away
  • Workers looking to improve their essential workplace skills
  • Job seekers referred by employment services or community agencies

Whether someone is aiming for a new job, a career change, more independence, or simply the chance to learn something new, we provide the support, tools, and encouragement to help them move forward.

Why Our Work Matters

Literacy and essential skills are the foundation for lifelong learning, employment, and full participation in our communities. By helping adults build these skills, we support stronger families, a more inclusive workforce, and healthier, more vibrant communities.

Learn More About What We Do

Peel-Halton-Dufferin Adult Learning Network (PHDALN) is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1993. Our primary function is to support and coordinate adult literacy services across a region that encompasses the Peel, Halton, and Dufferin areas. We work with 11 different, but connected, service providers in these regions. PHDALN's operations include:

Brokerage of Community Partnerships: We work to create partnerships with other organizations and entities in the community to develop pathways for individuals to achieve their goals.

Essentially, we connect with other groups in the area with our service providers to make their programs and services even better.

Outreach and Awareness: We carry out activities aimed at making more people aware of the services provided by our service providers. This involves reaching out to potential learners who can benefit from these programs, and referral partners who can connect others to these services.

We spread the news about their services. This means letting people who might need help to improve their skills know about their programs, and telling others who can refer people to them.

Advocacy: PHDALN works to increase the profile of adult literacy. This could involve advocating for more funding, better policies, or greater recognition of adult literacy issues.

We work hard to get businesses and the government to pay more attention to the skills and training needs of the people in Ontario.

Development of Tools and Resources: PHDALN creates materials and resources that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the service providers they work with. This could include teaching resources, administrative tools, or best practice guidelines.

We make stuff like learning materials, tools for administration, and guidelines on the best ways to do things. These help the service providers do their job better.

Learn About Our Partner Networks

PHDALN is one of 16 learning networks across Ontario. These networks provide support to Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) programs and are part of Employment Ontario (EO).

The primary funding for these core services is provided by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD). The networks also offer additional services that vary across different regions of the province. These services are funded through a mix of fundraising activities, donations, and other funding sources. These additional services might include centralized assessment, clear writing initiatives, organizational needs assessments for businesses, etc.

Learning Networks play several roles:

  1. Capacity Building: We work to enhance the abilities of LBS agencies by facilitating training and development opportunities.

  2. Service Coordination: We help to ensure that the various services offered are well-coordinated and integrated.

  3. Resource Provision: We provide resources and support to help these agencies in their work

  4. Awareness Raising: We help to raise awareness about LBS programs and their importance.

  5. Information and Referral Services: We provide information about their services and refer interested parties to appropriate training programs.

  6. Literacy Services Planning: We plan and coordinate literacy services, ensuring they are effectively delivered to those who need them.

  7. Community and Employer Engagement: We link with other community agencies and employers, to help adults in the community access a wide array of services and opportunities.

In Summary

PHDALN and similar networks play a critical role in enhancing adult literacy in their respective communities. We ensure that services are well-coordinated, effective, and widely accessible to those who need them.

In other words, we help adults get better at reading and writing in their communities. We make sure services are organized, work well, and can be found by people who need them.
